Silas Davis

I saw this request at the Mendocino county message board at Ancestry.com:

Hello: Working on project for Placer Co. Archives tracing people and have found some in Mendocino.
I found this in the Newspaper Vital records on the Mendocino Co. Gen page: Davis, Silas (Si), Death, 3/5/1948, Dispatch Democrat.
This man was in 1920 Census in Santa Rosa, then nothing. No record in CA Death Index. Have finally found this.
I hope someone has access to this newspaper. Please help.

The Dittemore's Of Oakdale

I saw this request at the Stanislaus County message board at Genealogy.com:

"Looking for any information concerning the Dittemore Family, Early arrival to Oakdale was John Loren Dittmeore who came to Oakdale around 1910, followed by Katherine Dittemore,who taught at Oakdale High for around 40 years,Last is John H Dittemore who was born in Oakdale in 1914 and left around 1938...

Hi John! A search through the California Death Index found that John Loren DITTEMORE was listed as Loren John. He died in the county on 15 May 1937. To follow is his obituary. From the Modesto Bee And News-Herald, 18 May 1937:

Henry Edward CHADBOURNE

I saw this request at the Humboldt County message board Ancestry.com:

"Born South Fork 1875. Son Edward Chadbourne born Phillipsville 1900. Anyone have info on the maiden name, etc of Henry's wife? When and where did he die?

Thank you for your questions. Unfortunately, I was not able to to locate a death date for Henry Edward CHADBOURNE. But I did find a lot of information that I think will help you out.

According to the 1910 Census (in Mendocino County), Henry's wife, Dora, was married to Thomas THURMAN for six years, so Henry likely died between 1900 and 1904.

Dora, born in January 1881 and who died in Humboldt County on 14 December 1924, was the daughter of Daniel SUTHERLAND and Ellen, an Indian woman. I have found very little information on Ellen.

Dora had a few children with Thomas THURMAN, including Ida Ellen THURMAN (1907-1983). She was married to Alonzo GOATES and is buried in Ukiah Cemetery in Mendocino County.

BROWER Family, Mendocino County

Mendocino County is one of the areas in California where do a lot of research. I was working on the MAZE family from this area, and in particular, Laura J. MAZE. She had married Joseph Troll BROWER. According to census records, Joseph was a widower by 1910 (I cannot locate the couple in the 1900 Census). I am unable to find a death date for Laura, which only increases my interest in this family. When I saw this post left at the Mendocino County message board at Ancestry.com, I decided to dig further into the BROWER family in the hope of finding information pertaining to the death of Laura MAZE-BROWER.

I find it interesting that Joseph's father, John Daniel BROWER, named a son after Joseph's father-in-law, Eugene MAZE. This son, Eugene Maze BROWER, died in Nez Perce County, Idaho, an area where my own family had once resided and an area where I also do a fair amount of research. I wonder if there is more than one connection between the BROWER and MAZE families.

So although I am still coming up empty on Laura's death date, I am developing an increased interest (and decent amount of information) on the BROWER family.
